Pokemon Card Game is doing very well.
eBay Japan has published their cross-border e-commerce trends for the first quarter of 2021 (Period: January-March 2021). They have revealed the sales trends for listings that have been sold by Japanese eBay sellers.
Pokemon Card Game along with Yu-Gi-Oh! and card games in general are among the top-selling products in general on eBay Japan (by Japanese eBay sellers). According to eBay Japan, trading cards grew more than 8 times compared to the same period last year.
In the top 10 highest transaction amounts (value), trading cards have risen from 8th place in the 3rd quarter of 2020 to 2nd place in 6 months. The 1st place is women's clothing & accessories. A reason for this big increase is because demand for buying trading cards has risen considerably and sellers respond to this demand by listing more cards, which creates more listings and ultimately more sales.
Trading cards are growing rapidly at an +833% growth rate and are number 1 in the Top 3 growth rates by eBay Japan. The category-leading Pokemon cards were not only sold in boxes from the latest expansion sets, but Pokemon cards also sold at high prices of over $1,000. Popular characters such as Charizard and Pikachu, and single cards such as promotional cards contribute to this.
Pokemon is also gaining popularity in the 2nd placed Anime Character goods, and many Pokemon plush toys are selling.
The popular e-commerce platform also revealed a Top 5 best selling (in sales volume) products in Q1 2021.
S4a Shiny Star V, which Shining Fates is based of and released in November 2020 takes the first place. This High Class Pack set which contains Shiny Charizard VMAX and Marnie SR, has been very popular.
Number 2 is SM11a Remix Bout which released in July 2019. Both aforementioned sets contains Pokemon that are very popular in the United States such as Charizard. The prices have increased because there is a shortage of stock and sales increased.
Number 5 is the Pikachu 124/S-P promo card from the Pika Pika! Pikachu! Promo Card Campaign given out in special promotion packs during the Sword & Shield S4 Astonishing Volt Tackle back in September 2020 if you purchased 1 booster box of that set.
The 1998 Pokémon "Pikachu" Illustrator CoroCoro Promo, which was the most expensive Pokemon card sold on eBay this period, sold for roughly US $375,000.
Number 4 is a One Piece poster exclusive to Shounen Jump and number 3 is the Prismatic God Box from Yu-Gi-Oh! which is also a very popular product. All of these products are Japan-exclusive products and are very popular overseas to import.
eBay Japan expects that the upcoming Eevee Heroes set is going to be very popular.
Pokemon is in its 25th anniversary this year, and eBay Japan anticipates that demand for cards and related products on eBay as a whole will increase. In addition to that, many buyers who purchase Pokemon cards and Yu-Gi-Oh cards are buying for investment purposes and collectors, so there is a high possibility that many high-priced cards will be traded in the future.
